Life Cycle: Annual
Soil Type: Fertile, well-draining, high in organic matter with soil pH of 6.5 - 7.5.
Growing Conditions: Relatively high moisture levels are needed to produce high, good quality yields. This crop benefits from mulching as high heat encourages bolting. Cut off any seed stalks that may form. NB: Not a very good companion crop, Grow in separate container.
Planting Depth: Plant at 1/4" deep
Days to Germination: Germinates in 7 - 14 days
Planting Distance: Sow 3 seeds per cell and allow the plant to be established (about 4 - 6 weeks) before transplanting outdoors. Plant 6"apart. NB: Be very gentle when transplanting as damage to the root system make cause bolting in young plants. If possible, direct sow.
Days to Maturity: 50 days for baby size, 80 days for full size
Height when Mature: Varies from 12" to 6" tall
Harvest: Leaves can be harvested in moderation at any time once the plant becomes established. For the bulb, once the base of the plant thickens, free the bulb from the soil and use sharp tool to cut the bulb just above the tap root. To extend the storage life, cut the foliage at least 2" above the bulb.
Succession Planting: For a continuous supply, sow new seeds every 2 weeks.
